How can a movie be so sad yet so uplifting?

I first watched this movie several years ago after seeing it at a video store, without knowing anything about the real life story of Evelyn Ryan or ever hearing about it when it was at movie theaters.  But it was so engaging and well-acted that I purchased the movie and have watched it a few times since.  The movie is rated PG-13 and we watch it using our ClearPlay Filtering DVD Player that edits it down to a clean PG rating.  Click {here} to learn more about ClearPlay.

This is the well-written story by Terry Ryan, who beautifully tells the story of her mother, and how she, for better or worse, stayed married to her alcoholic husband despite his drinking up his paychecks month after month leaving her without money to provide the necessities for her large family of twelve.  And she did so gracefully and with a good attitude mostly by staying focused on her determination to raise her children well and with love, which she did. The children sadly lived with the devastating damage caused by their abusive, alcoholic father and adored their mother for her calmness, sense of humor, and loving kindness and for holding their family together and maintaining their dignity amidst chaos.

The time period is 1950s-early 1960s ~ an era when companies offered prizes for writing verses for their commercials.  Out of need, Evelyn was creative and used her talent for clever rhyming by writing advertisement jingles and winning prizes and prize money for them.  And that’s how she raised 10 kids on 25 words or less, as stated in the title of this movie.  Even though this movie sadly depicts life with an alcoholic parent/spouse, it’s also a fun, upbeat, inspiring movie to watch.  It has a lot of clever filming with commercial jingles being sung and Julianne Moore brings Evelyn Ryan to life and brilliantly portrays her cheerfulness and positive spirit, which I found to be so heartwarming and uplifting.

This movie has definitely enriched my life and I highly recommend it.  If you can’t find it at the library or a local video store, it’s available {here}
