Modified Paleo

What is a modified paleo diet and why I’m giving it a try.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the way I cook and eat, and I’ve been reading about several different diets and food plans.  The reason for this critical observation of my eating/cooking habits is that over the last several years I’ve gained between 3-5 pounds/year and now I’m looking at having to lose about 30-35 pounds.  Ouch!!! What makes it especially painful is that now that I’m older I’m discovering that losing weight is not easy.  I walk several miles a week, which is great, but I’m still not losing weight.  So now I’m determined to get serious about it.

For all of my adult life I’ve had a hard time deciding how I should be eating.  When I was in my early 20s I ate vegetarian for a year or two and then gave it up because I realized that animal protein is important for my body. I’ve tried some eating fads such as protein only, no fats, mostly grains, and fruits and veggies only because I thought maybe that’s how I should be eating.   Since then I’ve tried to eat a balanced diet to include grains, meat, vegetables, and fruit.  That all sounds great, right?  But I also eat too much refined sugar and flour.  At least once a year I try to commit to cutting out sweets and breads but I LOVE bread and I’m not a super disciplined person when it comes to restrictions.  Plus, I love to cook.  And bake.

So, like I said above, I’ve been checking into several different eating plans and what I’ve decided might be a good plan for my family and me is to eat what I’ve termed a modified paleo diet.  We don’t have any health restrictions and I believe that some whole grains and dairy are good for our bodies so my plan is to incorporate the paleo plan of no refined sugars and eating mostly meats, nuts, vegetables, and fruits and then throwing in some dairy and whole grains here and there but restricting grains to a few times a week instead of eating them everyday {and try really hard to not use all-purpose flour}.  Our sweet treats will be naturally sweetened or sweetened without using refined sugar ~ I’ve found a lot of great recipes that I’ll be trying and sharing that will be nutritious yet satisfy our sweet tooths.

That’s my plan.  Do any of you have experience with eating this way?  What are your successes or failures.  I would love to hear about them.

    I am seriously looking into modifying the paleo and gluten free diets for myself. Paleo just seems overloaded with fats that impact cholesterol. I also think we need to have some grains and dairy. I think it’s important to banish as much sugar and processed foods as possible and be aware of the types and amount of saturated fats we consume.
