Homemade Ranch Dressing

Some things just taste better with ranch dressing ~ dipping {fresh veggies, chips, crackers, buffalo wings, and fried chicken}, on pizza {Ranch Chicken Pizza}, spooned over cheesy scrambled eggs {my son, Alex, and his wife, Amanda, actually do this}, and of course drizzled over green salads.

This homemade dressing is at least a gazillion times better than the bottled brands at the grocery store, and it uses everyday kitchen ingredients, has no weird preservatives, and goes together in a snap.  I slightly modified the recipe out of {this cookbook}, which is one of my favorites.

Ranch Dressing

Yield: 2 cups

Serving Size: 2 tablespoons


  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried dill


  1. In a bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and sour cream.
  2. Add the milk and whisk.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients and whisk well.
  4. Pour into a pint-size jar and cover with a tight fitting lid.
  5. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes for the flavors to blend.

      Hi Felicia,

      We make the dressing and keep it in the refrigerator for a week or two until it’s gone and have never had it go bad on us, which I guess makes sense because mayo and sour cream last a long time in the fridge.

    I’ve been wanting to try out my own homemade ranch dressing for a while now! This looks perfect and not too complicated! Do you know how long it will keep in the fridge? Thanks for a great post =)

      Hi Mary. It’s not complicated at all ~ in fact I would say it’s super easy. We usually use it up fairly quickly {within about 2 weeks} but I’m sure it would last longer than that because mayo and sour cream both last a long time in the refrigerator. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

    Looking forward to trying this. My son LOVES Ranch and I’ve been wanting to make my own but have only seen recipes that take buttermilk. I don’t keep buttermilk on hand and kind of bulk at buying it because of the price so I’m excited to try this recipe with sour cream. Pinning now and hopefully will make tomorrow!

      Great, Lydia. Let me know how your son likes it. It is super convenient to use sour cream since I always have that on hand but like you, not usually buttermilk. Have a great rest of the day.

    This was delicious . I used buttermilk instead of milk . That was the only change I made. Thank you for the recipe .
